Marek Cyprian Chmielewski
Institute of Organic Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences
Prof. Chmielewski received MSc from Warsaw University of Technology (1965), PhD from Institute of Organic Chemistry (1972), and habilitation (1981). He was Research Director of the Institute and then Director. He spent two research stays, in Purdue University and in Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. He was a visiting professor in Purdue University and University of Sevilla. He was a JSPS fellow, and a fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry Journals Grant for visitors. He was Vice-President of the Polish Academy Sciences for the term 2011 – 2014.
The research interest includes stereocontrolled syntheses of β-lactam antibiotics. Particularly using the [2+2]cycloaddition of isocyanates to vinyl ethers, 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of nitrones, and application of the copper catalyzed cycloaddition of nitrones to terminal acetylenes. The other projects involve also the synthesis of amino- and iminosugars from unsaturated sugar lactones and synthesis of glycosyl hydroperoxides and their use as epoxidation reagents
